What can I do with a five year old that is safe, but fun?

If you want to take a tour with your five year old, the Canyon River Adventure or the Colorado River Float trip would be fine.  However, you may need to take some extra things with you to entertain him/her during the trip.  It is perfectly acceptable to take things with you on either of these tours.  The water portion of the tour is smooth so you don’t need to worry about your things getting wet (unless you throw them overboard.)  Your five year old is also old enough to take the Inner Canyon Jeep Tour, but here again you may want to bring extra things including snacks.

My favorite thing to do with a five year old at the Grand Canyon is to drive out to the Desert View Watch Tower.  They can safely climb the tower inside and get great views of the Grand Canyon.  There are even pay telescopes available so you can an even closer view of the Grand Canyon.  Another feature I like is the authenticity.  It is a replica of an ancient Native American watch tower so there are some great cultural aspects that are shown in the building.

The IMAX movie is a highly recommended activity that your five year old can enjoy.  Popcorn and drinks are available, just like at any movie theater and the movie is short and moves quickly from scene to scene so it will capture and hold his/her attention.

You may also want to get involved with the Jr. Ranger program.
