Good day to you all. We are enjoying a bit of a "breather" after a particularly nasty week of weather. Two storms in three days, which dropped over two feet of the white stuff in some areas, have left us reeling as we try to reschedule Grand Canyon tours for those who can.
Today we corresponded with a guest from Australia who asked a very difficult question: "How do I make sure I’m not missing anything?" *sigh* The problem here in the American Southwest is that there is simply so much to see and do that you could spend a month here and still not see everything. Heck, I’ve been here over 20 years and even I haven’t seen everything! Otherwise, you’ll have to pick and choose what you can realistically take in without literally “driving” yourself crazy. What we mean by that is that long drives are a “necessary evil” in this part of the country, and all the best scenery is usually very spread out.
That being said, the best destinations in the Grand Canyon area include but are not limited to:
Lake Powell. A very scenic drive 2.5 hours’ drive from Grand Canyon South Rim that can easily be extended to 3 or 4 hours since it takes you along the East Rim drive of the Grand Canyon and the Navajo Indian Reservation. When you get to Lake Powell, or its gateway community of Page Arizona, you can take part in activities such as the Colorado River Discovery Float Trip, 4X4 tour to Antelope Canyon, a boat tours on Lake Powell, or scenic flights to Monument Valley.
Bryce Canyon National Park. Located in Southern Utah, 5.5 hours’ drive from Grand Canyon South Rim, 3 hours’ drive from Lake Powell. Site of one of the Earth’s most bizzare manifestations of water erosion, and world-famous rock formations called “hoo-doos.” Popular activities include hiking and horseback riding. Can be explored in one day if pressed for time.
Zion National Park, also located in Southern Utah, is a canyon of the Virgin River, a tributary of the Colorado River. Unlike the Grand Canyon, where the sightseeing is done from the “top down,” in Zion, you do it from the “bottom up.” 2 hours’ drive from Lake Powell, and worth an overnight stay, two if you can manage it. Popular activities include hiking, photography and horseback riding. From Zion, Las Vegas is another 3 hour drive, so it’s a worthwhile stop on your tour if you’re planning to visit Las Vegas anyway.
Monument Valley, a 3.5 hour drive from Grand Canyon South Rim, straddling the borders of North
ern Arizona and Southern Utah, is located on the the Navajo Indian Reservation. In Monument Valley, you can enjoy a 4X4 tour or horseback ride through some of the most iconic scenery of the American West! Crunched for time and really want to see this place? Consider a scenic overflight or air/ground tour from Page Municipal Airport.
Sedona, Arizona, 2 hours’ drive from Phoenix, site of Oak Creek Canyon and spectacular red rock formations. You can also enjoy tours to Ancestral Puebloan sites and peaceful riverside hiking. In Sedona you can spend a good two days or more exploring, shopping and relaxing. From Sedona, Grand Canyon South Rim is a very scenic 3-hour drive.
These are just a few examples of things not to miss – the longer you have to spend, the better! I guess the only way to make sure you don’t miss anything is to do what I did and move here.
‘Til next time, make it a “grand” day!
P.S. Got a question you’re just dying to ask? Ask it! No really, right now! Just go back to the homepage, GrandCanyon.com, play the video, type in your e-mail address and ask your question. Somebody – a real live human being – will answer it personally.
